What is the bowed string instrument originating from North India?
The sarangi
The sarangi is one of the most expressive stringed instruments in Indian classical music, capable of closely mimicking the inflections of the human voice. With over 40 strings, of which only three or four are played while the others resonate sympathetically, the sarangi requires a highly elaborate playing technique. Traditionally, it is used to accompany singers, but virtuosos like Pandit Ram Narayan have popularized the sarangi as a solo instrument, giving it a prominent place on the international music scene.
