The Battle of Verdun mainly opposed the French and German armies from February to December 1916. The fighting around forts, heights and supply routes caused hundreds of thousands of dead, wounded or missing. Verdun became a symbol of endurance and sacrifice in France, particularly around the phrase “They will not pass”. The Battle of the Somme, fought the same year by the British and the French against Germany, also caused immense losses. Both can be called among the bloodiest of the war; the duration and the belligerents must be specified to make Verdun alone identifiable.
