Donald Duck first appeared on screen in 1934 in a short film produced by Disney Studios. The character and his universe were then developed by numerous screenwriters, animators and designers: they are not the literary work of a single author called Walt Disney. Carl Barks played a particularly important role in Donald's comic strips. He notably created Scrooge, Gontran Bonheur, the Rapetou and the town of Donaldville, and gave this universe lasting depth. Riri, Fifi and Loulou were created by Ted Osborne and Al Taliaferro before appearing on screen.
